Kiteboarding Bali Spots

There are several good kiteboarding spots in Bali, with each having their own character. Some spots are more suitable for beginners than others.

Bali is a water sports paradise, with warm water and air temperature around 30 degrees Celsius year round.
Shallow lagoons with flat water or reefs where you will find some of the world’s best waves are all in each other vicinity.

Bali has two wind seasons. The raining season brings wind from the west and the dry season brings winds from the east.

The raining season starts around November and runs until April. These winds are not very consistent and blow between 10 to 17 knots. Watch out for incoming rain fronts! They appear very fast and cause heavy gusts. Always keep in mind the water quality. The onshore winds bring back a lot of garbage and other forms of pollution.
December and January usually are the windiest months.

The dry season winds blow from May until October and is a more consistent wind blowing between 10 to 17 knots, occasionally a bit stronger.
July, August and September are the windiest months.

During the dry season we will be kiteboarding at spots like:

  • Nusa Dua You will be kiteboarding here in mostly on-shore winds on a reef protected lagoon with flat to choppy water and on the outside reefs some world class waves. Late in the dry season, southern winds can give you side-shore wind for epic wave riding conditions. To get there you drive past the Hilton hotel and the Nusa Dua golf course and continuing your way to "Geger Beach".

  • Tanjung Benoa There are several good places to start from. You will experience predominantly side-onshore to side-shore winds with choppy to very flat water inside the lagoon. On the lowest tides watch out for urchins. There is a short punchy righthander which on its days can get very powerful and is nice to kiteboard on. The rest of the reef which surrounds the lagoon give great waves for jumping. Lots of space on the beach make this on of the best options for kite boarding in Bali. Watch out for all the watersport activities, jetski's, banana-boats, speedboats and waterskiers all share this area!

  • Canggu A west coast kitesurfing spot with gusty side-shore winds, dependent on the tides this spot is some days the only option. Watch out for the reef which is partly exposed on the lower tides. On certain days the wind here is a couple of knots stronger than elsewhere.
Do not kite on your own here. When something goes wrong and you can't relaunch your kite or you are in serious problems, you are on your own! It is not an easy swim in with the current and rocky outcrops lining the beach.

  • Turtle Island Channel For low tide flat water kiteboarding in the channel between the southern beaches of Sanur and the adjacent Turtle Island. With the lowest tides there is always enough water here. To get to this channel you can make a down winder from Sanur or drive to Turtle Island. The launching area on Turtle Island isn't the best, with dirty sand and lots of dead pieces of coral laying around! Be careful with the water quality, the water can be pretty disgusting!

  • Sanur The wind here is predominantly side-onshore to on-shore. The reef protected lagoon gives choppy to flat water. You will find some nice waves for kiteboarding on the outside reefs. Lower tides give flat water around several sandbanks. Be careful with the water quality. Hotels in Sanur have been dumping their sewage water without treathment into the ocean here as well as several rivers from downtown Denpasar flowing into the ocean here.

During the raining season we will be kiteboarding at spots like:

  • Jimbaran Bay Side-onshore to on-shore winds with choppy water and some beach break waves. There are several beach accesses. The best launching spot will be the most northern part of Jimbaran Bay, which gives you access to a part of this bay just south of the airport. Due to the angle of beach here the wind is slightly less onshore. From here you can tack upwind to reach the waves at "Airports Right". Keep away from the landing zone or you might have a free trip hanging behind a Boeing 747!

  • Kuta Reef Side-onshore winds with flat to choppy water in the lagoon and on the outside reef some consistent waves.

  • Kuta beaches Predominantly onshore winds and waves, dependent on the current sandbank formations choose the best place.

  • Legian beaches Predominantly onshore winds and waves, dependent on the current sandbank formations choose the best place.

  • Sanur Go to the most southern beaches. Here you will find some gusty side shore to side-offshore winds with flat to choppy water.

Keep in mind that all the spots are dependent on the tides. Get a free tide chart upon arrival in Bali and plan your kiteboard session according to the tides!

All along the west coast, east coast and northern coastlines of Bali are endless beaches which are still to be discovered. Go and explore!
